Weekly Farmers’ Market
Market
Souk el Tayeb is the first weekly farmers’ market of Lebanon and was created to preserve food traditions and the culture of small farming in Lebanon, working to protect the interests of the local small farmers and producers, enabling them to compete fairly in an era of globalized agricultural trade.
Souk el Tayeb’s novelty is about being a farmers market … where only producers – farmers, bakers, cooks… – come and sell their own products; a direct contact from producer to consumer.
By connecting both consumers and producers who value traditional, high quality, natural products, producers are able to get a fair price for their goods, gaining recognition and a better income.
A pot of jam is not just that, but linked to a person, a human being… Weekly markets are meeting places, reunions for everybody.
Through Souk el Tayeb, we are perpetuating and preserving centuries-old food traditions and life in Lebanon for future generations to enjoy.

Quality Control
Thanks to its weekly farmers market, Souk el Tayeb is connecting both consumers and producers who value traditional, high quality products.
In an effort to ensure sustainable product quality, for the benefit of farmers, food producers and customers wishing to buy high quality home-grown and local produce, souk el Tayeb created a “Quality Control Department”.
The ultimate goals of “Quality Control Department” are:
- To enhance the overall performance of small scale farmers and producers, through providing onsite support and advice in much needed sectors today, and in environmentally sound productive fields.
- To implement the Rules and Regulations that have been developed to protect the interests of small farmers, producers, and customers
- To Ensure proper control and inspection of the products [fruits and vegetables, dry products and other processed food]
- To conduct field inspection and regular follow-up on producers’ products to ensure that they abide by the Souk’s quality standards
- To follow up in coordination with the organic certifiers on any directive provided
Rules & Regulations
Lobbying
Souk el Tayeb has obtained support, lobbied for many projects and sponsored awareness campaigns, especially in the organic sector for the development of organic farming as a sustainable agricultural system.
Souk El Tayeb has also arranged many meetings, workshops and events with partners, organic stakeholders and ministries to work on the organic legislation in order to provide a legal framework for, and to encourage, organic farming in Lebanon.
Souk El Tayeb encourages its producers to go organic and works with organic certifiers in Lebanon to improve cooperation and coordination between the various stakeholders and those concerned with organic farming.

Capacity building
In an effort to develop farmers and producers’ capabilities and skills, Souk El tayeb created Tatweer, the capacity building program.
The Capacity Building component aims at building, reinforcing and improving farmers and producers’ skills in both their technical and non technical aspects:
a) The technical aspect will be through provision of support in production, mainly agriculture and food processing techniques
b) The non technical aspect (or business aspect) will be through provision of assistance and guidance on sales and marketing techniques, admin & accounting, as well as visual identity & promotion and many other needed topics.
